Week 1: Smoked Salmon

There is a lot of food that could take first place for me, but my absolute favorite at the moment would have to be raw smoked salmon. The perfect rendition of this dish is also salty, with the standout feature being that powerful smoky taste that feels like it coats your tongue. The smooth, tender, and tasty salmon compliments the smoke without overpowering or clashing with it, allowing for a perfect balance that is almost unbeatable for me. There is the danger of overdoing it with the salt, but that usually isn’t a problem. The meal is relatively simple in terms of ingredients, but its taste is proof that complexity isn’t necessary to make an excellent dish.

  1. Hey Andrew! I actually tried smoked salmon on bread for the first time last week. I went to the Swan Oyster Depot with my parents on Polk Street in San Francisco right before move-in day. Just like you say, the salmon was smooth with a smoky taste. I can definitely understand why this is your favorite dish. Unfortunately (at least at the Swan), I can only afford to have it about twice a year!

  2. I completely agree and love smoked salmon so much that I bought a smoker many years ago and now make my own!

  3. After reading what you said, I think I'm going to try smoked salmon. I've never had it before, while I have had cooked salmon, with the way you're describing how it being smoked means so much towards the meal, I'm going to have try that in the future.
